Patient Information
Man, in his 70s
Disease/Symptoms
- Spinal Canal Stenosis
- Disc Herniation
- Disc Degeneration
- Sciatica
- FBSS (Failed Back Surgery Syndrome)
Patient Condition
The patient worked in the fishing industry until the age of 63. Since the age of 70, he has had difficulty walking 50 meters due to sciatic nerve pain, so he underwent surgery at a nearby university hospital at the end of last year. After the surgery, paralysis appeared in his right leg, making it impossible for him to lift the leg. After more than half a year with no improvement, the patient decided to visit our clinic.
Examination

This is the MRI result of the lower back. There is a deformity in the disc between the third and fifth lumbar vertebrae, diagnosed as disc herniation. The nerve pathway in the leg is also still narrow, indicating spinal stenosis.
Examination
Muscle atrophy is observed in the right leg, suspected to be neurogenic muscle atrophy. Below the calf, vibration and surface sensations are lost, and the tendon reflexes are also absent. This is a case of total paralysis.
Analysis
Since more than six months have passed since the onset of paralysis, we must explain that there is no treatment method that can improve this condition. Although there are reports that stem cell therapy immediately after spinal cord injury can improve the condition, this cannot be applied in this case, so unfortunately, it can only be managed with rehabilitation.
Words from the Clinic Director
There are no available treatment methods for total paralysis, whether in the field of regenerative medicine or otherwise. Today is a very sad visit for me. I am also very disappointed. Please forgive us for not being able to provide treatment.
